Region 6 provides solid waste education and support to the following areas:

Waste Collection Information

Always make sure your waste is set out on time, placed in the correct colour bag and is separated properly to avoid missed collection and/or rejections.

West Hants Regional Municipality

  • Place waste curbside no later then 7:00 am the day of collection.

  • Clear bags ONLY for garbage.

  • One (1) bulky, non-metal items is allowed, per garbage collection.

  • Total of six (6) bags of garbage, per collection.

  • Total of ten (10) bags of recycling, per collection.

  • One (1) green cart, paper liners only

  • Up to three (3) paper bags for leaf & yard waste, per green cart collection.

  • Clear bags for garbage with a one (1) black bag allowance.

  • One (1) bulky, non-mental item, per collection.

  • Total of ten (10) bags of recycling and paper combined, per collection.

  • One (1) green cart

  • Up to three (3) paper bags for leaf & yard waste, per collection.

  • Recyclables, paper and cardboard is collected the opposite week of garbage.

Region of Queens Municipality

  • Garbage is placed into black bags.

  • NEW* Container recyclables must be placed in a separate bag from paper and boxboard products.

  • Paper recyclables and container recyclables can be placed into a blue or clear bag, separately. 

  • Total amount of combined waste, per collection is 2 cubic meters.

  • Compost to be placed into a green cart

Items NOT collected curbside

These items are not collected curbside which require residents to dispose of them differently, often times taking them to a depot or hazardous waste facility.

Tires

Nova Scotia has been recycling tires for over 20 years.

Tires can be taken to any tire retailer, up to 4 at a time, rims removed for FREE!

Household Hazardous Waste

The term "hazardous" refers to materials that are corrosive, flammable, reactive or toxic. Please look for those symbols on your containers to determine if it is hazardous or not.

Most municipalities offer a household hazardous waste depot for residents to dispose of these items, FREE of charge.

Contact your local municipal office for more information.

Electronic Recycling

The Electronic Recycling Program began in 2008. Residents are asked to take all electronics such as TVs, computers, stereos, GPS and gaming systems including cords to an electronic depot for FREE!

*Please check with your municipality to see if they offer a special collection of this material as some do.

Safe Sharps Program

The Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia (PANS) administers the safe sharps program in Nova Scotia. This program allows residents to dispose of needles, syringes and lancets safely. Pharmacies provide a safe sharps container which can be returned when full for FREE! These items should never be placed into the garbage or recycling stream.

Used Oil, Oil Filters, Glycol and Containers

The Used Oil Management Association (UOMA) program began January 1st, 2020. These items can no longer go to landfill and must be recycled.

Residents can take used oil, oil filters, glycol and containers to most retailers. To look for a site near you please visit https://ns.uoma-atlantic.com/en/homepage
